Description:
A street scene taken near the junction of Chulia and Pitt Streets. The men working in the centre of the picture were convict labourers from India. In the 19th century, the Colonial Government designated Penang and Singapore as penal colonies, where those who committed serious offences served their sentences as forced labour to construct public buildings, build roads and perform other maintenance works.
