Chulia Street, Penang (c. 1900s)

Description:
A street scene taken near the junction of Chulia and Pitt Streets. The men working in the centre of the picture were convict labourers from India. In the 19th century, the Colonial Government designated Penang and Singapore as penal colonies, where those who committed serious offences served their sentences as forced labour to construct public buildings, build roads and perform other maintenance works.

Northam Road, Penang 1913

Description:
A view of Northam Road. Described as the 'prettiest' road in Georgetown with its tropical trees on both sides of the road. It is also the beginning of villadoms where large mansions with spacious grounds are found here. The Penang Club and Runnymede Hotel are situated along this road.

Malay House at Tanjong Katong, Singapore

Description:
This timber house illustrates the traditional Malay house in a village with compound. Coconut trees were the common tropical trees grown by villagers around their compound. Milk extracted from the fruits is used as an ingredient in Malay cooking.

Government Office, Penang 1900-1905

The original building of the Government Office in Penang was completed in 1889 and housed the Resident Councellor's Office, the Audit Office, the Public Works Department and the marine Department including the Harbour Master's Office.

Description:
St. Paul's Church on Residency Hill. Originally built as "Our Lady on the Hill" chapel in 1571 by Portuguese Captain Duarte Coelho. The Dutch later used it as the burial ground for their noble dead. The church was renamed 'St. Paul's Church'. Only the massive walls of the church and the gate of the Portuguese fortress 'Porta de Santiago' at the foot of the hill remain today.

Borneo Wharf, Singapore (c. 1870s)

Description:
As Singapore grew in popularity as the gateway to the far East, the old harbour at the mouth of the Singapore River became overcrowded, forcing companies such as the Borneo Company Limited to build Borneo Wharf in deeper water areas around the New Harbour (now Tanjong Pagar) to cater to more steamers. In 1885, Borneo Wharf, which allowed for underwater repairs and easy transportation if combustible fuel, was sold to the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company. The Colonial Government in turn acquired it in 1905.

Anglo-Chinese School, Singapore (c. 1890)

Description:
Founded by the Methodist Missionaries on 1 march 1886, the first Anglo-Chinese School was located in a small shophouse along Amoy Street but soon relocated to Canning Rise. In the 1900s, the original building was replaced with the present building, which the National Archives of Singapore took over for its offices in 1997.

Botanical Gardens, Singapore (c. 1900-1910)

Description:
The idea of a spice garden was first mooted by Stamford Raffles, soon after he established Singapore as a trading port for the East India Company. The Botanical Gardens eventually took the shape of a public park and experimental station for economic crops in 1859 on land donated by Chinese pioneer. Hoo Ah Kay (also popularly known as Whampoa). The Gardens remain "among the loveliest institutions of the kind in the Est" as described in an early 20th century guidebook.
