The First Mobile Shop

Description:
The first mobile shop open for business in a Malay Kampung (village). It has for sale, sarongs, mengkuang baskets and mats, brass wares and numerous items made by craftsmen in the kampungs. The mobile shop projects was initiated to encourage more kampung folks to start their own cottage industries.

Description:
Malay children brushing teeth at a public stand pipe in a kampong (village). In the 1950s, the provision of safe water supply was regarded as one of the most important oublic health measures by the Singaporean Rural Board, which administered matters such as water supply, markets and parks. As many households still could not afford piped water, public standpipes were erected to provide rural residents wit portable water, 1959.

The front of a shophouse in Chinatown displaying lanterns for sale during Mid Autumn Festival in Singapore. Also known as lantern or Mooncake Festival, it is celebrated by the Chinese on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar (around mid or late September in the Gregorian calendar) as a celebration of abundance of togetherness, 1961.

Bubongan Dua Belas

Description:
"Bubongan Dua Belas" is a very rare example of Brunei traditional architecture. Bubongan Dua Belas has existed for almost 100 years as one of the oldest surviving buildings in Brunei Darussalam. The building was used as the home of British Residents in Brunei from 1907 up to 1959 and by the British High Commissioner from 1960 to 1984.

'Padian'

Description:
"Padian" is a group of women vendors peddling household goods such as fish, vegetables, fruits, firewood and others in a boat from house to house in Brunei water village. They usually be seen in a group selling their goods from early morning till late in the afternoon. This activity has dissapeared from the water village scene since 1990s.
